THE IMPORTANCE OF PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT.
An important element of employee development is a significant and well-executed performance management system. The system, which creates a positive work environment to enable employees to perform to the maximum with the best of their abilities. Modern performance management recognizes that performance is a result of a combination of factors: systems, protocols, resources and human resource (Edmonstone, 1996).

The performance management aims to improve organizational functions, team, and individual performance. An effective system will measure the progress of the organization’s objectives.

Practicing good performance management requires proficiency in certain capabilities. Capabilities which are observable, measurable patterns of Knowledge, skills, attitude, are essential characteristics that an individual need in order to perform work roles or occupational functions successfully. The manager should identify the KSA’s of the employees to successfully complete the organizational goals. For those organizations that seek to take advantage of their employees which is the most valuable asset and the most difficult to replicate a strategic performance management system is vital (Armstrong & Baron, 2005).

It is a continuous cycle which commences with the recruitment decision and includes setting performance criteria, monitoring and assessment, feedback, action planning, and learning and development activities. A successful performance management system should:
• Align individual and team effort with organizational goals.
• Create a shared vision of the organization’s strategic direction.
• Monitor progress on goals and achievements and provide coaching.
• Appraise individual performance with feedback and formal documentation.
• Reward and recognize individuals upon performance. If the performance doesn’t meet the desired standard, a new performance development plan has to be given within a time frame.
Talking of performance in an organization according to Bandura (1986), suggests that people learn from one another, through imitation, observation, and modeling. According to his Social Cognitive Theory, it encompasses attention, memory, and motivation; factors which will lead employees with proactive personalities exhibited higher creativity, and high morale especially if the leaders support them and their work assignments (Kim et al, 2010).
